This sophisticated video management system from SWITCH

means that students no longer need complain about missed

lectures. As for lecturers, it offers a unique opportunity to follow

new approaches to teaching. Recording lectures on a multimedia

basis with SWITCHcast entails little cost as the hardware and software, together with efficient support,

are all provided by SWITCH. This ensures that the benefit for the students is all the greater: they can

follow the virtual lecture online or as a download on their own personal iPod – as often and as long as

they want to. Many of the larger universities in Berne, St. Gallen and Zurich are already successfully

using SWITCHcast for their services. The recordings cannot be viewed by the public but are accessible

primarily to those registered for a specific subject.

Overview

The SWITCHcast platform is a full feature, self-contained solution that supports lecture recording

workflow from the classroom to the playing device end-to-end. Its strong feature is the ability for any

user to edit the content online and to create sub-clips as needed from the original media. (Since 2012,

spectators are not restricted to watching but can also annotate the videos they see). The content is

then made available via a secure environment protected by federated authentication and

authorisation infrastructure (AAI). The content can be delivered in three main formats for streaming,

desktop, and mobile devices. Apple laptops act as a recorder. The presenter’s screen is captured by

Epiphan. All the signals can then be sent to the central server for post-production. The management

interface is simple and self-explanatory. It gives the administrator control over the whole process.
