Cisco IOS Software
Cisco IOS Software Releases at a Glance
Current Major Releases
Current Early Deployment Releases
Release Description
Major
Releases
Mainstream software for Enterprise networks. As of September 1996, no new
features or platform support will be added after initial FCS of a Major Release to
protect the stability of the release. Only Major Releases are targeted to achieve
General Deployment (GD) status.
Prior to achieving GD status, Major Releases are appropriate for point solution
and limited deployment in production networks; however, there may be issues
with newer releases. Release notes and outstanding bugs should be consulted
prior to deploying.
General
Deployment
(GD)
A Major Release that has reached a level of stability and maturity which makes
it suitable for use anywhere in a customer’s production network.
GD software is appropriate for use in mission-critical applications. Release
notes and outstanding bugs should be consulted prior to deploying.
Early
Deployment
(ED)
A software release used to deliver new feature and platform support in advance
of a Major Release. New functionality may be introduced after initial FCS,
resulting in software that may be less stable than Major Releases. Proven
functionality from ED releases will be incorporated into a subsequent Major
Release.
Appropriate for point solutions and limited deployment in a network, where the
new functionality is required. As with all releases, release notes and
outstanding bugs should be analyzed prior to deploying.
