Known Problems and Work-Arounds
34 October 1, 1998
Description Problems with capture instances connected to alarms
Symptom If an alarm is configured to start a packet capture instance, the instance
will appear to be started when the alarm triggers, but no packets will be
captured. If you are viewing the instance in Protocol Analyzer when the
alarm triggers, you could see a message indicating that the “instance no
longer exists”. Despite this error message, the instance is still there and
you can re-attach to it; however, no packets are captured.
If an alarm is configured to stop a packet capture, the packet capture is
restarted when the alarm is created or modified (deleting any packets
that were capture prior to setting the alarm). However, when the alarm
triggers, the packet capture is stopped correctly. [Defect IDs 0804–
009324]
Work-Around None.
Description Launching Protocol Analyzer from Internetwork Monitor results
in error message
Details Refer to the description on page 19.
Description Some Protocol Analyzer filter expressions are not converted
properly to RMON filter entries
Details In some cases, a Protocol Analyzer filter expression will not be converted
properly to RMON filter entries. This problem affects capture on all
agents, but does not affect local mode. No error is issued; however, the
packets captured are not correct for the expression specified.
In particular, if the filter expression includes at least two items (source
host, protocol, destination host, etc.) in addition to a packet status item,
the packet status portion of the filter is not converted.
Filtering on protocol LLC with a token ring agent also results in an
incorrect filter.
Work-Around Specify a filter expression that converts correctly, then post filter the cap-
tured data to further filter the captured packets. For example, if you
want to capture packets according to this filter expression:
(proto udp nfs) and (host ip kermit) and (status crc)
